Diet therapy in polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS)
At the Derm-Al Centre, patients with one of the most frequent female endocrine system disorders, the polycystic ovary syndrome, are assisted both by the endocrinologist and the dietitian.
Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is a hormonal disorder causing elevated levels of androgens, which, apart from fertility problems, excess facial and body hair, acne and male-patterned baldness, leads to abdominal obesity and metabolic disorders. Female patients with PCOS suffer from congenital insulin resistance, which means that the body has reduced sensitivity to insulin – the hormone that is responsible for controlling blood sugar level and fat metabolism. The disorder may lead to arteriosclerosis, hypertension and type 2 diabetes.
The right diet is a very important element of PCOS treatment, as it helps reduce body weight, improve carbohydrate metabolism and insulin sensitivity and consequently – restore regular periods and ovulation.
