Protruding ear correction
- Description of the treatment
-
At the Derm-Al Centre, we offer protruding ear correction in local anaesthesia. The procedure is performed for aesthetic reasons, to improve the patient’s state of mind and self-esteem.
Protruding ears are an innate defect caused by underdevelopment or lack of the antihelix - the conchal cartilage. As a result of the defect, the ears fold and protrude.
The treatment involves making incisions in the back part of the ear concha and modelling a new antihelix. The incisions are concealed in the skin fold behind the ear and are not visible after healing. The conchae may be modelled by cutting the cartilage and folding it back or, if the cartilage is thicker and more bulky, cutting away a fragment of it. Depending on the condition of the operated area, either absorbable or removable stitches are applied to the wound; the latter need to be removed after 7-10 days. the latter need to be removed after 7-10 days. After the surgery, anti-swell haemostatic compression bandage is applied to make sure the operated concha stays in shape. Wound dressing should be worn for 10 days non stop, and for the next 8 weeks - at night, so as to prevent uncontrolled deformation of the concha.
The treatment takes about one and a half hours. After the treatment, the patient may return home.
For the first few days after the treatment, the area may be painful and stingy, and a tension may be felt. Recovery takes about 10 days. The effect is durable and after 6 months the cartilage reconstruction process is complete.
