What is dermatology and venereology?

Dermatology is a branch of medicine that focuses on the skin, hair, nails, and mucous membranes. It includes the diagnosis and treatment of all disorders related to skin lesions, and those that disrupt the proper functioning of the skin and mucous membranes. A dermatologist has knowledge covering a range of other specialties such as allergology, immunology, oncology, and endocrinology.

Venereology is another specialization always associated with dermatology. It is a branch of medicine that focuses on sexually transmitted diseases, with particular emphasis on their visible skin symptoms.

Within dermatology itself, over time, several smaller fields based on its knowledge have emerged. These include pediatric dermatology, dermatologic surgery, aesthetic dermatology, and podiatry.
