How does pediatric allergology differ from adult allergology?
Pediatric allergology is a field of medicine that deals with allergies from infancy to adolescence. At Derm-Al Center, allergic diseases in children are managed by a pediatrician-allergist. It is crucial that allergy treatment in children is conducted safely and that the doctor is an expert in selecting medications for young patients. Anti-allergic drugs often contain steroids, which are indispensable in quickly combating inflammation but must be used under strict medical supervision. Allergy tests should also not be performed on children without the explicit recommendation of an experienced doctor, as even small doses of allergens used in tests can burden and expose the child's body.
It is worth visiting a pediatrician-allergist if the child has respiratory, digestive, or skin complaints, and the family doctor has ruled out other diseases or is unsure of the diagnosis. Observing the child, determining how persistent the symptoms are, the circumstances in which they occur, what causes their exacerbation, when they first appeared, and which previously used medications were ineffective are important elements in treating allergies in children. To determine the type of allergy, the pediatrician-allergist may order prick or patch allergy tests. Treatment may include desensitization in the form of oral vaccines or injections.
Early detection and treatment of allergies in a child can prevent the development of asthma or other serious diseases.
