Demodex folliculorum test
- Description of the examination
-
At the Derm-Al Centre, we offer microscopic diagnosis of demodex folliculorum.
Demodicosis is a chornic disease caused by the demodex folliculorum mite. Infection is caused by contact and it is likely that the disease is also transmitted by dust contaminated with the mite’s eggs. In humans, demodex folliculorum most typically dwells near the eyes and nose, on the forehead and in the nasolabial fold. It may also dwell in other areas: on the hands and feet. The symptoms of demodicosis are: itching, burning and reddening. In the case of eyelid demodicisis, patients complain of lacrimation, a feeling of having something in their eyes and of foggy vision. In this case, the condition is often accompanied by bacterial infections that cause repeated stye and chalazion.
How does the test work?
The demodex folliculorum test requires a microscope preparation of a sample extracted from the diseased area (eyelash, eyebrow, purulent secretion) that is analysed for the presence of the mite. The result is available within appr. 30 minutes after sampling. Before the test, the face must be cleansed of any creams and makeup, and mascara must be removed from eyelashes and eyebrows. Also, the patient should inform the medical personnel of any medications he or she is taking, as these could affect the result of the test.
