Laryngological consultations at the Derm-Al Centre include ear irrigation. The treatment is performed in the case of a blocked ear or if the ear needs to be cleared for proper diagnosis.
Blocked ear may cause buzzing, hearing problems, a feeling of having water in the ear and sometimes pain. Ear blocking may be caused by catarrh, sudden change of pressure or inflammation, or it may be a sign of developing deafness, or it may be caused by improper ear cleaning. The most typical cause of ear blocking is excess wax. It should not be removed with hygienic buds, because they usually push wax deeper into the ears and may even damage the eardrum.
How does the treatment work
Before the appointment, the patient should apply special drops or spray that can be bought at a pharmacy without prescription, to soften the secretion. This will make it easier for the physician to remove the secretion through irrigation. Irrigation is done by applying lukewarm water (around 37 degrees C) with a syringe, at low pressure. Children must be sitting on an adult’s knees during the treatment and must be held in the right way, as the physician instructs. The treatment is generally painless.
If the laryngologist suspects ear inflammation or perforation of the eardrum membrane, he or she removes wax with a special hook or an aspirator.
