Fractional laser treatment
- Description of the treatment
-
The Derm-Al Centre offers surgical and fractional laser treatment.
Fractional laser treatment is done for strong skin reconstruction, e.g.: to remove post-acne or post-operative scars, burns, stretch marks, wrinkles (resurfacing), sagging skin, discolouration caused by medications and the sun or spots on the hands, or to regenerate the skin and make it look better, to reduce pores or to improve the tone of the skin and make it smoother. Fractional CO2 laser treatment is the most effective in many of the above conditions, and in some of them, like stretch marks, it is the only option.
Fractional CO2 laser treatment involves vaporisation a given area of skin cells. The fractional laser scanner “punctures” the skin with thousands of micro columns, thus causing thermal micro damage of the skin. Around those “punctures” remains a mesh of healthy, undamaged skin that stimulates quick and strong regeneration. Also, the laser energy reaches deep into the skin, stimulating fibroblasts and the synthesis of healthy and elastic collagen.
The skin improves not only aesthetically, but is is also more immune to cancer than the “old” skin. Skin cancer risk increases with age. As the skin ages, it is more likely to develop cancerous conditions which, if not treated, may transform into skin cancer (especially squamous cell cancer).
How does fractional laser treatment work?
A specialist physician adjusts the laser settings to the specific skin condition and the expected results. Thanks to a small spot size and brief impulses, the pain is not so strong and there is no need to use anaesthetic cream. This is good, because such creams usually contain a lot of water that consumes a part of the laser’s CO2 energy, which is supposed to be absorbed by water in the skin. During the treatment, the laser head is applied to a given area of the skin and sequence of impulses are activated, which feel like micro injections. After the treatment, the skin is red and may itch. The doctor applies soothing ointment to the treated skin. The next day, strong swelling is a normal condition, especially in the eye area, if the laser was applied to the face. The swelling disappears in 1-2days, and visible, small brown dots - scabs develop. The skin treated by laser must not be washed for appr. 24 hours after treatment, and for the next 2 days it should ba carefully rinsed without rubbing. After two days, hydrating creams are recommended. During at least the first two weeks after the treatment, alcohol-free cosmetics should be used. After the treatment, one should refrain for a few days from physical exercise, massages, hot baths and any situations that could cause reddening or hyperemia of the skin, or expose the skin to damage. Also, exposure to sun should be avoided and it is important to use cosmetics with 50+ filter for at least 30 days. The healing process takes 5 to 10 days. The first effect is visible after around 2 weeks, and the full effect - after around 6 weeks, which is the time needed for collagen to reconstruct. Better effects are achieved, if the treatment is repeated.
Fractional laser treatment may be combined with platelet rich plasma to accelerate healing and stimulate skin reconstruction. For more information about platelet rich plasma injections, click here.
