The Derm-Al Centre has a mycology lab for diagnosing skin and nail fungal and yeast infections as well as demodex folliculorum.
Skin and nail fungal and yeast infections are typical dermatological conditions. Their proper diagnosis and treatment require mycological examination.
How does the examination work?
It is a direct test. Scrapings of the epidermis or nail filings are taken from the patient and examined under the microscope for the presence of fungi or yeasts. A sample for the examination is taken by a lab assistant. The result is available within an hour.
In case of any doubts, culture growing is recommended, meaning that the sample taken from a patient is “sown” on proper medium and incubated. Results for the presence of pathogenic fungi are available within 4 weeks, and yeasts - within 1 week.
The area to be sampled must be cleansed of any cosmetics, ointments and creams. The nail plate must be clean of nail polish.
