Patch tests - The Polish Baseline Series of allergens according to the recommendations of the European Society of Contact Dermatitis
- Description of the treatment
-
At the Derm-Al Centre, we perform patch tests for skin allergies.
Patch (epidermal) tests are used to diagnose allergy to substances that cause allergic reaction as a result of contact with the skin (contact allergens). They are used mainly in diagnosing contact dermatitis. They help diagnose allergy to metals (chromium, nickel, cobalt and other), fragrances, cosmetic ingredients, gum ingredients, resin and many other chemical substances that we come into contact with.
How does the patch test work
Patch testing is performed by applying the tested substances in special cavities on an adhesive patch. The patch is placed on the patient’s skin, between the shoulder blades, for 48 hours. Then, the patch is removed to check the skin’s reaction, such as erythema, infiltration, lumps, blisters, or even erosions as a result of contact with respective allergens. The test is repeated after 72 hours, and possibly again after 96 hours.Atopy patch tests are a kind of epidermal tests. They are used in diagnosing food allergies. Here, fresh food is applied to chambers (milk, egg protein, fruit, vegetables) and placed on the patient’s skin. The first check is done after 20 minutes (expected immediate reaction), and then after 48 and 72 hours, respectively, the same as in standard epidermal tests.
