Phototherapy of psoriatic changes, vitiligo, spot baldness
- Description of the examination
-
The Derm-Al Centre has a specialist ultraviolet irradiation platform for the treatment of psoriasis, vitiligo, spot baldness and certain allergy-related diseases, like atopic dermatitis.
Depending on indications, the dermatologist chooses UVA or UVB irradiation. UVB irradiation has shorter waves (290-320nm) that penetrate into the epidermis only, which means that it is a safer form of therapy, suitable also for children. In the case of the UVA irradiation, the beam length is 320-400nm, and it penetrates into deeper layers of the dermis, which is why it is used in more advanced stages of a disease.
In the case of advanced psoriasis, if there are no contraindications, it is possible to perform PUVA photochemotherapy, which is UVA irradiation combined with psolarens, e.g. compounds that make the skin temporarily sensitive to UVA. This combined treatment is more effective, but is also associated with more contraindications and side effects. How does phototherapy work
Phototherapy involves exposing pathological skin to ultraviolet radiation on a regular basis, usually 2 or 3 times a week for 3 to 6 weeks. The type and intensity or irradiation and the length and frequency of exposure, as well as the duration of the therapy are determined by a physician.
