Videostroboscopy - larynx evaluation during phonation (production of sounds by the larynx)
- Description of the treatment
-
The Derm-Al Centre offers videostroboscopy - larynx and voice function examination.
The examination is performed using an endoscope with a camera and strobe light. The patient and the physician see the examined area on the computer screen. The patient may also receive a recording of the examination.
Videostroboscopy helps evaluate the tension, mobility and condition of the vocal cords and their construction and functions as well as detect pathological changes, including cancerous changes.
How does the examination work
The laryngologist uses a thin endoscopic spatula in a disposable cover. The endoscope is inserted in the patient’s throat, the same as a traditional spatula in normal laryngological examination. The micro camera on the top of the spatula records the image on the computer. The patient is asked to utter vowels during the examination. Using strobe light (pulsing) with pulse frequency different than vocal fold pulse frequency makes it possible to see the vocal folds in slow motion. Thus, the movement of the vocal folds during phonation may be carefully examined and any irregularities may be detected. The examination is helpful if patients complain of sore throat or dysphonia, especially if they use their voice in their work (e.g. teachers, lecturers, actors or singers), in order to properly diagnose the cause of the problem, plan the treatment and predict the effects of the treatment.
- diagnosing inflammations or hypertrophies,
- detecting cysts, tumors, polyps,
- detecting foreign bodies in the throat,
- examining the larynx before thyroid surgery,
- pre-diagnosing throat cancer.
