Cracked heel treatment
- Description of the treatment
-
Derm-Al Podiatry, apart from basic and advanced foot pedicure, also offers dedicated treatment e.g. of cracked feet, hyperkeratosis, ingrown toenails, corns, injuries or fungal nails.
The heels are the part of the body that carries the heaviest burden. Because of that, the skin on the heels is twice thicker than elsewhere on the body, and more likely to crack. Cracking of heels is usually caused by improper care or unhealthy lifestyle, e.g. wearing the wrong kind of shoes (too tight or made from non-natural materials), unhealthy diet - too little vitamin A, drinking too little water, poor hygiene, improper pedicure or being overweight.
If the problem is disregarded, the heels not only look bad and hurt to walk, but also deep cracks may develop being a perfect place for bacteria to develop, which may in time lead to hyperemia, capillary bleeding or feet infections. In extreme cases, amputation may be necessary. Regular specialist podiatric treatment helps keep the heels and whole feet in good condition and quickly react to any pathologies, making it the most effective prophylactic and skin-care measure.
How does the treatment work:
The treatment is performed by podiatrist using professional devices (drill machine and drill bits). The tools are either sterile or disposable. The skin is disinfected and examined for the level of hydration and lubrication. Information about the patient is recorded in their individual podiatric file. The podiatrist talks to the patient and assesses the depth and number of cracks, and decides on the most suitable therapy. The podiatrist discusses the treatment plan with the patient and starts the procedure.
Specialist softening cream is applied to the cracked heel. Then, excess corneous layer is removed with appropriate drill bits and technique. Finally, the podiatrist uses fine grain drill bits to close the skin pores and smoothen the heels. The skin is once again disinfected and dressing with appropriate preparation is applied, depending on the cracks (dry or moist). The procedure takes about 30-45 minutes and is painless, and the effect is visible after the first treatment. However, depending on how cracked the your feet are, the treatment may have to be repeated several times, and you may also be asked to come for check-up. You will be advised how to safely and effectively take care of the skin on the heels to prevent recurrence of the condition.
