Scar correction

The Derm-Al Centre offers scar correction with the CO2 fractional laser or by means of plastic surgery. The purpose is to make a scar less visible.
A scar develops as a result of the wound healing process. Complications accompanying the process, such as infections, stretching of the edges of a wound or injury, may make the scar look bad. Also, wounds heal differently in every individual. Some patients tend to develop pathological scars, e.g. keloids. Ugly scars also develop as a result of large and vast injuries, e.g. burning.
Laser scar removal is performed on various kinds of scars: postoperative, traumatic or caused by burning, acne or chickenpox. There are two laser scar removal methods. In the case of atrophic scars, the fraction laser is used. The procedure involves controlled damaging of the skin and forcing its reconstruction, regeneration and new collagen synthesis. In order to achieve the desired effect, the procedure needs to be repeated a few times at specific intervals. Hypertrophic scars may be surgically removed with laser. The procedure involves “burning” the overgrowing tissue. For more information on fractional laser procedures at the Derm-Al Centre, click here.
Surgical scar correction involves cutting out a scar and surgically treating the area. Plastic surgeon makes an appropriate incision, e.g. “Z” or “W” shaped, to change the direction of the scar and reduce the tension around it. The new cuts may sometimes be concealed by natural skin folds, wrinkles or Langer lines, or otherwise, skin transplant from e.g. medial part of the arm or he groin may be needed. It is essential to ensure ideal healing conditions. The purpose is to correct and conceal a scar, to make it more aesthetic and less noticeable. The procedure is performed in local anaesthesia. Stitches are removed after 7-10 days.
Depending on the size of the scar, the procedure may take 30 to 90 minutes. After the treatment, the patient may return home.
For the first few days after the treatment, the area may be swollen and red. It may also be painful and stingy, and a tension may be felt. To prevent the scar from growing back or improperly healing, it is necessary to strictly follow the physician’s instructions. The final effect is visible after around 6-12 months: the scar looks better and it is less bothersome and less visible. It is impossible to remove a scar completely.
Before removing a scar, it is necessary to consult the physician who will be performing the treatment.
